Nice and educational too. Most folks who see it are surprised to find that garnets come in green.

Hi Mark. The Garnet group is a delightful world on it's own! I admire the beautiful garnets found in Canada and the orange, spessartine garnets 'Mandarin' from Kaokoland (Namibia). I have had opportunities to purchase the last, but the sellers want insane prices. My experience is, that good coloured garnets of reasonable size, are hard to obtain (and expensive). The green Garnets from Tubussis (Namibia); Tanzania and Madagascar, are also beautiful.

Hi Pierre
I agree. I really like the garnet world and there seems to be quite a few I still need to corner. I found the basic ones in the series but I suspect there are some exotics out there that are hard to come by. You know for a basic garnet I had a hard time finding a pyrope I liked and settled for a reasonable one that filled the gap. I have two andradites, melanite and demantoid so I suppose I need to find a topazalite. I don't have hydrogrossular and frankly would not know where to find it.

Hi to everybody!
My opinion (and my behaving way ehile attending to fairs and expositions) is: I usually take a "want list"of systematic mineralogy with me, both for minerals and for gemstones. About the latter kind of stones, I take my ground from the newsbook I periodically get from Idar-Oberstein. Of course I always take the "Glossary" too with myself (you all should know what I'm talking about!). If I visit a particular place, I always read about what is found there and make a "want list" of.
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Hi all,
Thanks for sharing your answers to my question. For the most part, they were as I suspected; some with very specific wants such as to fill needs in a systematic collection and others just using the "anything that is aesthetic" philosophy. Again, this variation in approaches is what makes our hobby so much fun.

Hi Tobi
You wouldn't be implying there is a direct correlation between money and minerals?? Surely not! '8)

For me it would be a galena & siderite specimen from Neudorf. But as Tobi explained earlier it is better to have some money when you target such specimen ;-)

Yes, that was my first answer - for a lot of money can take most minerals off a collector's wish list ;-) But to give a real answer what certain minerals are on my list (i do own some of them yet, but not in a quality that would be worth a wish list):

- AMAZONITE with SMOKY QUARTZ, Colorado
- AQUAMARINE, Pakistan
- CALCITE, Sankt Andreasberg / Germany
- ELBAITE, Stak Nala / Pakistan
- EMERALD, Colombia
- ETTRINGITE, N'Chwaning / South Africa
- FLUORITE (red/pink) from the Alps
- FLUORAPATITE (red), Pakistan
- FLUORAPATITE, Panasqueira / Portugal
- GALENA/SIDERITE, Neudorf / Germany
- PYROMORPHITE, Bad Ems / Germany
- RHODOCHROSITE, Sweet Home Mine / Colorado
- RHODOCHROSITE, Uchucchacua Mine / Peru
- SCHEELITE, Mount Xuebaoding / China
- TOPAZ, Katlang / Pakistan
- TOPAZ, Schneckenstein / Germany
- WULFENITE, Los Lamentos / Mexico

... I'm sure there are even more, it's a long list ;-) But a philosophical question: Wouldn't it be the most boring moment for a collector when he owns all that he ever desired? Isn't searching a part of collecting?

Wow, Tobi - that's quite a list. I most certainly agree with your statement that having an unlimited budget to purchase whatever specimens you fancied would take much of the enjoyment from our hobby. And Christophe, a good Neudorf galena/siderite ranks right up there at the top of my list too.

Unpolished quartz crystal, doubly terminated/floatter, 2 to 3cm in size, with aesthetic inclusions. Really hard to get my hands on anything like that (due to narrow criterias)

Oh and there's also that one, which is definately not in my field of collecting, but still I did instantly fall in love with it, unfortunately it was too expensive for me and eventually got sold:

Hi,
Impossible minerals to find, as minerals with tellurium and gold:
Calaverite, Nagyagite, Sylvanite, Petzite ....
As much sulfur is a mineralizing agent of copper, tellurium is as a mineralizing element of gold.
Roger.
